4. The use of exhibition space to create meaning

There are many ways that exhibition space can be used to create and also enhance meaning in the artwork displayed.

The exhibition space could have a physical relationship to the actual artwork. The Tate Modern's Turbine Hall is a good space to hold Dominique Gonzalez's work, 'TH.2058'. The bunk beds and science-fiction novels resting on them suggests that it is a place of refuge in a dystopian future. The  huge size of the Turbine Hall makes it an ideal and realistic setting for Gonzalez's vision and does a lot to make the audience feel a part of the work and as if they are themselves seeking refuge.

Most gallery spaces are tidy, uncluttered and white walled. This helps the audience focus all of their attention on the artwork. When someone walks into a huge room with nothing in it except for the pieces of art, the eye is automatically drawn to the art and gives it full consideration. This enables the viewer to completely concentrate and in doing so find the meaning of the art which otherwise may not have been possible.

The atmosphere inside galleries is sometimes almost like a library. It is quiet because people are concentrating on the art. People don't go to galleries for the type of socializing that would be found in other places such as restaurants, clubs and pubs. Going to a gallery is more like going to the cinema or gigs and all other artistic events. People go less to interact with each other and more to interact with the art, so in galleries it is often the case that people do not talk at all and pay more attention to the artwork than to the people around them. This creates a good viewing atmosphere and environment that enables the viewer to feel comfortable and clear headed, which would help in questioning and understanding the meaning of the work on display.

OUTLINE OF AUDIENCE: I would like the audience of my film to be as vast and varied as possible. The main character in my story is inspired to create art just through seeing something in everyday life, the main point is that he was inspired. I like to think that everyone can be inspired and that it is a universal emotion. Although my work will focus on how a graffiti artist is inspired I hope that even if the audience cannot relate to the character of the graffiti artist they can still relate to the idea of inspiration and how that can bring about creativity and positive actions. 

If I were to be more specific about who I think would definitely enjoy my film it would be people who like the graffiti culture and also people that enjoy fast paced short films. 

OUTLINE OF STORY: The film centers on a young man who is bored and disillusioned with what he sees as his dull and uneventful life. One day whilst traveling on a train he spots a wall of graffiti which inspires him to be more creative. With this surge of new found energy he decides to go home and fulfill his artistic ambitions.

'Doll Face’ is a short 4 minute film created by Andrew Haung
The film is computer graphic based and very craft like.
The film is a robotic head coming out of a box with a ladies face
Staring at a television screen.
Each time the face looks at an image on the television the face changes their image to the same one on the tv screen. When the tele moves further away the robitic head follows continuing to change image every time.
When the tele gets to far away from the head the head cant extend any more so it snaps and breaks.
Andrew was trying to challenge the media with what he done in this video as he showed a face trying to be like what it sees on TV.
When we see this well when I saw this it make you think about women and how they make themselves look like people on the television.
Some celebs go too far with trying to make themselves look good and I think this is what Andrew Haung done well with in this short computer graphic based film.

Audience and audience interpretation of the work

The way people interoperate these sorts of films may be completely different to the way in which I look at them.
But like what people say about art it’s the way you interoperate the world and with film such as John Smith’s ‘Girl Chewing Gum’ my first interpretation of it was about one man in power over everyone else.
With things like this people could take what ever feeling away with them and they would not necessarily be wrong.
People have different interpretations of film because some people may have seen things that are similar and may have brought that same kind if interpretation.
Things such as Andrew Haung’s ‘doll face’ for me were about how the media make women feel insecure but for people who don’t read the paper or watch much television would maybe have a different interpretation due to these things.

The interpertation of this film for me is quite simple but could be interoperated the wrong way which would defeat the subject matter the artist was trying to give.
with any peice of the work the artist does it for a reason but you can sometimes be misunderstood.
i dont think many people would find it hard to understand this peice of work or read anything else other than the subject meaning into it.

How these works might inspire your own work

The works I have spoken about in the last posts are all fantastic pieces and all have individual qualities but if I had to choose one that I found truly inspiring to what I want to create in the future it would have be koyaanisqatsi.
It would have to be because the editing and the narrative of the film were so great.
I find it very craft like and it also has a great concept to it.
I thought the amount of time lapses and fast paced scenes were fantastic and made the viewing of the film a whole lot more enjoyable.
The other thing that I would comment on is the music I think it went fantastically.
Out of all the other films I have watched koyaanisqatsi would have to be the most inspiring with a great concept and craft envolved all throughout.

One of the films that has a great narrative behind it is Andrew Haungs doll face.
Doll Face is a computer graphic based short film which shows a robotic head coming out of a box staring at a TV screen.
It shows the doll face change its appearance every time a different picture appears on the television screen.
The story behind it I believe is about the media and how it makes women fell insecure about their appearance.
Andrew Haung has challenged the media with this short film which I believe is a great way with using experimental media not only with the narrative but also with the way Andrew has used computer graphics.
For me I believe there is no non narrative structure as I believe it is straight forward to see the narrative behind Andrew Haung’s work.
It’s also very interesting how the robot breaks when the TV gets further away I believe this shows how women get stressed about the situation of how the media make women feel ugly.
It has one similarity with Koyaanisqastsi and how its shows life in ruin, I think this is the sort of message Godfrey Reggios was also trying to create.

Past films such as john smith’s girl chewing gum won’t compare technology wise with films such as Godfrey Reggios Koyaanisqatsi.Girl Chewing Gum is very simple like I have spoken in my last post as it was shot back in the 1970s, this would also mean that that some styles are different in way of shooting the film, such as in Koyaanisqatsi you see lots of very advanced difficult shots and good editing but in Girl Chewing Gum its all very simple, this I believe is to do with the year in which the film was made but also the budget of the films.
These two films I believe are very well matched in the way of concept (in my point of view) but there are things such as the technology, techniques and styles.
· Technology would be different due to the years of both films
· Techniques would also be different as they both have different narratives and some shots may need to be different to one another to tell the story in a better way and also directors normally have their own style.
· Styles are very different because of directors but as there is a gap in years some styles may have been discovered during this time such as different ways of shooting film.

John smith’s 1970 film girl chewing gum contains a scene of a street with various people walking around doing everyday things, the camera just seems to pan from side to side and up and down.
You hear what we first perceive to be a director who we think is their directing but it becomes apparent that it is a pre recorded scene with voice over put on, when you first see the short film it seems diagetic but then after watching some more shots which make the viewer confused its obvious that it is pre recorded and has a non diagetic sound.
The concept of this film is that we believe the directing man is in a position of power and that we always believe what we here, but after realising it was pre recorded it shows the viewer not to always believe what we here.
John smith has challenged the media with this piece of work fantastically.
As for the craft of the film there is non it’s very basic,
The film has also a very low budget.

A film that challenges and compares to this is godfrey reggio’s koyaanisqatsi
An experimental film made in 1982 with a big budget.
Koyaanisqatsi is a great film with great shots envolved. It has a very interesting concept to it that we can compare to john smiths girl chewing gum.
Koyaanisqatsi is all about life in ruin and about the state of the world, I thought this was similar to girl chewing gum as this also, challenged the media and the state of the world today.
koyaanisqatsi has more craft based shots as girl chewing gum is more simple.

Telling lies review

TELLING LIES is a short film with various telephone conversations going about a night before, it comes up with the words other than an image.
the conversations shows what the actuall person is thinking other than what he says .
there is only one main person to the story but it shows about his wild night on the raz and how
him and his girl friend cheated on each other.
the audio is non diagetic,type comes up very fast so you need concentrate on the type alot but it doenst make viewing uncomfterble.

telling lies is highly entertaining and different
worth a watch.

THE GIRL CHEWING GUM is also very different,it seems although the main man speaking is directing the scene,
but after a while its obvious that its a pre recorded scene and the man is saying what people are doing so the audio is non diagetic.
its more easy to understand if your watching the film you cant get a better feel for concept.

1001 nights is a very parculiar video, its shows a black background with five women standing with their eyes closed telling you storys.

its still hard for me to put my finger on what the actuall point of the short film was but is worth a watch just to see what you think.

koyaanisqatsi review

1983 film koyaanisqatsi directed by godfrey reggio is a fantastic film full of remakable shots
that leave the viewer in disbelief of how its done, this film is all about the pace.
the film starts slow gets faster midway through and settles downtowards the end.

the music is also very important in this film due to their being no dialouge.

overall a very enjoyable watch i would deffinately reccomend it if you looking for something different.

Hello people these are three of my photos from the photgraphy trip to brighton last friday(19/9/08).

These are three of my favourite so i decided to share them.

We were asked to capture the gritty side of brighton so the most relevant photo to this is the bins at the back of the pub (restraunt or club ).

I particually like this one because of its gritty dirty side to it, its a shame it wasnt dark and didnt have a camera with light and dark mode because i think it would of made the photo more enjoyable to look at and more relevant.

The stencil on the pillar is also one i really like just because of the color and the bard wire going across the face.

As for the joker shot it just looked good to capture and freeky also.

My expectations of experimental video

I believe experimental video to be more about the creative side of video production,seeing as there is no wrong answer (to an extent)im going to let my mind run away.
Experimental video does exactely what it says in the title its all about experimenting in and around video production ,most people would of thourght of art as they read this ,but it doesnt have to be artistic atall, it just has to be experimenting with camera angles or just being different (out the ordinary and original).
It also is about learning new tequniques with cameras and equiptment and being creative .
creative and experimental work from my point of view is things such as stop motion and animation these are what i believe to be experimental video.
